Newark, East Orange, Irvington Police to Conduct Police Traffic Checkpoints

East Orange Newark

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announces that Newark Police will conduct COVID-19 informational and social awareness checkpoints along with police from Irvington and East Orange beginning at 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.

“Our goal is to educate people in the hopes that we can help save lives,” Director Ambrose said.

“Some people are still not aware that non-essential and non-emergency travel is barred due to the seriousness of COVID-19.

They don’t understand the importance of social distancing or why they are being advised to stay home if they are non-essential personnel.

Today’s operation is aimed at bringing awareness,” he added.

Police at checkpoint locations will share information on the Executive Orders issued by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy requiring residents who are non-essential workers to shelter-in-place and to practice social distancing in accordance with the Center for Disease Control’s guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Today’s checkpoints will be conducted from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at locations listed.

The public will also be provided with an informational flyer to take with them after meeting with Police at the checkpoints.

“As always, our goal is public safety,” Director Ambrose said. “We want to make sure that everyone is aware of the danger COVID-19 poses to the health and safety of our residents and neighbors.”

Director Ambrose urges anyone who observes COVID-19 violations to call: 973-733-6000.
