According to a statement released by RWJBarnabas officials, the effort comes at a time when many New Jersey households continue to feel the impact of recent disruptions to federal SNAP benefits.

Mark E. Manigan, President and CEO of RWJBarnabas Health, said the system remains committed to serving communities where the need is greatest.

He emphasized that access to nutritious food is directly tied to overall health, and supporting families through the holiday season reflects the organization’s mission.

Since 2023, RWJBarnabas Health has committed nearly $20 million to food access programs across New Jersey, with another $7 million planned for 2026.

That support includes a recent $1 million donation to 14 local feeding organizations during the government shutdown.

This year’s food distribution events involve 22 community partners and Federally Qualified Health Centers in cities including Newark, Elizabeth, Plainfield, New Brunswick, Jersey City, Long Branch, West Orange, and East Orange. The health system is also working with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey to distribute hundreds more turkeys, chickens, and hams.

During a holiday giveaway on Nov. 24, Manigan joined Newark Councilmen Michael J. Silva and Anibal Ramos Jr., with Ramos serving the Ironbound community, alongside RWJBarnabas Health staff to deliver food boxes and turkeys to families at the Saint James Health and RWJBarnabas Health Holiday Food Drive.
