Newark City Hall Closed Due to Impending Snowstorm

Mayor Ras J. Baraka and the Newark Municipal Council announced today that City Hall will be closed and all non-emergency Newark municipal services will be suspended tomorrow, Tuesday, January 27, in anticipation of a two-and-a-half-foot snowfall expect to impact the region starting tonight. 

Police, fire, and other uniformed emergency services will be unaffected.

"Heavy snowfall is expected tonight and tomorrow, and we are closing all non-essential City agencies to insure the safety of our residents and municipal workers during this blizzard. I urge residents to stay home during this snowfall, avoid driving if they can do so, drive very carefully if they cannot, stay informed, and observe our snow removal ordinances. If we all work together during this snowstorm, we can continue to transform Newark into a City we can all believe in."

There will be no trash pick-up on Tuesday, January 27. Therefore, residents should not put out their trash on Tuesday, January 27, as doing so may result in a fine. On Thursday, January 28, regular trash and recycling collections will resume, and residents whose trash and recycling are picked up that day must place their refuse and recycling at their curbs for pick-up by 6 a.m. In addition, street-sweeping is suspended this week.

The Department of Health and Community Wellness's inspection services, transportation for seniors, and health clinics, will not operate on Tuesday, January 27. In addition, the Bureau of Vital Statistics will be closed. Residents will not be able to apply for permits, birth certificates, name-change certificates, marriage licenses, nor pay water or tax bills at City Hall.

The Municipal Court will also be closed on Tuesday, January 27. Residents can make payments on parking and traffic tickets through the website www.njmcdirect.com<http://www.njmcdirect.com/>. To utilize this website, residents will need their summons number, including the prefix, and the City of Newark's court code, which is 0714.

In addition, the "My Brother's Keeper" registration event scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, at 5 p.m., in City Hall has been postponed due to the weather. A new date for this event will be determined later.
