Newark Boy Killed, Several Others Injured in Pennsylvania Crash

A Wednesday morning crash on Interstate 78 East in Lower Saucon Township resulted in the death of a 5-year-old Newark boy and left several others injured, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Police responded to the scene sometime around 12:56 a.m., for a report of a multi vehicle crash.

Investigations revealed that as a 2011 Nissan Versa - driven by Nadine Walton, 54, of Newark - was on the left lane, she drove off the left side of the highway.

As Walton got back onto the highway, she struck a guard rail along the highway's right shoulder and came to a stop after returning to the left lane of the road.

According to police, 26-year-old David B. Getz Jr., 26, of Easton, driver of a 2014 Kia Forte, struck the Nissan along with a 1996 Dodge Caravan driven by 49-year-old Michael Gura, of Warren.

Emergency crews transported three of the four occupants of the Nissan to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township. The occupants - later identified as 31-year-old Stefany Stephens, of Newark, a 2-year-old girl, were thrown from the vehicle after the vehicle struck the the guard rail, police said. Walton (driver) was also transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

The fourth occupant, only describe as 5-year-old boy, was found dead at the scene.

The two drivers of the Kia and Dodge were also transported to the hospital with minor injuries, state police said.

Although the cause of the crash remains under investigation, police did add that containers of open alcohol were found inside the Nissan.
