Newark Based Meat Company Recalls Beef After Testing Positive for E. coli

A Newark meat company has announced the recall of 3,586 pounds of bulk beef cuts and trimmings after a sample tested positive for E. coli.

Newark-based G & M Co. is recalling beef and trimmings were produced on June 8, 9 and 10 which were sent to retailers in New Jersey and New York. The issue was identified on June 14, 2016, when FSIS Inspection Program Personnel (IPP) conducted trace-back and trace-forward activities after the firm received a confirmed positive for Escherichia coli O157:H7 from FSIS sampling and testing.

The affected products bare plant identifier number M5476 inside the federal mark of inspection.

There have not been any confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of the beef, according to officials. However, officials are concerned that the infected products may be in consumers' freezers.

Anyone consumers that has the recalled product should return it to the place of purchase or dispose of it immediately.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps for two to eight days after exposure to the organism. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.
