Police in Newark are investigating an armed carjacking in Newark Tuesday morning. The alarming broad-daylight carjacking incident developed on Route 22, placing officers on the scene.

Preliminary reports indicated that three black males, their identities still unknown, reportedly approached the driver of a 2023 white Audi around 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday.

In a brazen act, one of the suspects brandished a firearm, threatening the victim and forcibly taking possession of the vehicle.

Local police departments and the New Jersey State Police were promptly alerted about the carjacking and advised to remain on alert for the stolen Audi and its armed occupants.

According to the investigation, just before 1 p.m., law enforcement officers managed to track down the car in Newark's South Ward. Their attempt to pull the vehicle over initiated a high-speed chase on I-78, eventually leading to the loss of the suspects' vehicle near Exit 8 on Route 24 West in Summit.

During the chase, the suspects managed to find their way back to Newark.

However, their escape was short-lived, as they were apprehended by the New Jersey State Police at the intersection of Peshine Avenue and Meeker Street without further incident.

The unoccupied carjacked Audi was recovered on Bergen Street.

Fortunately, no physical injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
