Newark Announces the Promotion of Three African American Women to Police Department Leadership

Newark City officials announce the promotion of three African American women who will each head key areas of Newark Police Division leadership.

“We are pleased to welcome these superior officers into higher ranks and broader levels of oversight in the City of Newark,” Mayor Ras J. Baraka said. “These promotions reflect our resolute commitment to foster increased diversity and inclusion in key leadership positions within our Police Division.”

“These acting supervisors join the command staff after the retirement of more than 10 commanders,” Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said. “They mirror the community we serve and are the future of the Newark Police Division.”

Acting Captain Sharonda Morris will oversee the Newark Police Division’s Office of Professional Standards.

Acting Captain Tawana Rollins will head the Consent Decree & Planning Division.

Acting Captain Aloma Wright-Johnson will serve as lead commander of the 6th Precinct.
