New Year's Day Crash Kills Toms River Girl in South Brunswick

Authorities have identified the 13-year-old girl killed on the Route 1 crash New Year’s Day.

Police were called to Route 1 northbound lanes at Deans Lane around 5 a.m. Friday for a report of a two-vehicle crash.

At the scene, police found a Nissan Sentra, driven by 27-year-old Azel Hernandez Vargas, had struck a utility pole after it was broadsiding by a Nissan Quest that was headed northbound.

Hernandez Vargas’s Sentra was occupied by the following five people:

Blanca Azucena Hernandez Vargas, 13, of Toms River, pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital

Cirilo Velazquez-Roja, 21, of Lakewood, (Backseat passenger) remains in critical condition.

Ilda Hernandez (back seat passenger) is currently listed in stable condition.

Sarah Zollner, 19, of Toms River, (front passenger) was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The three North Brunswick occupants of the Nissan Quest, Paramjit Singh, 59 (driver), Rajinder Kaur, 59 (front passenger) and Harinder Kaur, 32 (rear passenger), were also injured.

The circumstances surrounding the fatal crash remain under investigation.
