Some New Jersey residents receiving health coverage through NJ FamilyCare will face new requirements beginning next year.
According to information released by the New Jersey Department of Human Services, starting January 1, 2027, certain adults between the ages of 19 and 64 will be required to complete at least 80 hours per month of approved activities to maintain or qualify for NJ FamilyCare coverage.
The requirement, referred to as “community engagement,” can be satisfied through a combination of working, attending school or studying, participating in job training or work programs, and volunteering. (NJ FamilyCare Checker)
However, the changes will not affect every NJ FamilyCare member. The state says exemptions are available depending on a person’s circumstances, and some adults may not be subject to the activity requirement. (New Jersey Government)
Another change will require some members to renew their NJ FamilyCare coverage every six months rather than once a year.
NJ FamilyCare officials say members affected by the changes will receive additional information by fall 2026.
Residents are encouraged to make sure their contact information with NJ FamilyCare is current so they don’t miss important notices.
The state has also launched an online tool allowing residents to determine whether the new requirements may apply to them.
