As 2023 draws to a close and 2024 approaches, the New Jersey State Police are emphasizing the importance of responsible decision-making during New Year's celebrations.

Their message comes in the wake of last year's holiday period, which witnessed five fatal crashes in New Jersey, four of which were related to alcohol and/or drugs.AdThe State Police are advocating for a proactive approach to prevent such tragedies.

They urge those planning to consume alcohol during the festivities to avoid driving and instead consider alternatives such as taxis, rideshare applications like Uber and Lyft, designated drivers, or staying at the celebration venue.

To reinforce their commitment to safety, the New Jersey State Police will deploy over 55 troopers across the state for traffic duty during the holiday period.

These officers will concentrate on enforcing laws related to speeding, aggressive driving, improper cell phone use, seatbelt usage, fatigued driving, and driving while intoxicated (DWI).AdColonel Patrick J. Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, highlighted the importance of their increased road presence.

"Our goal is to foster a safe driving environment and reduce crash-related fatalities," he stated. "Safety is our top priority, and we encourage everyone to celebrate the holiday responsibly."

The New Year holiday enforcement period will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 29, and conclude at 5:59 a.m. on Tuesday, January 2.

The New Jersey State Police wish everyone a safe and joyful New Year celebration.
