City crews have installed a designated crosswalk with a pedestrian-activated flashing light system at the intersection of Morris Avenue and Butler Parkway, a well-traveled route connecting Summit High School, Washington Elementary School, athletic fields, and the popular Magic Fountain ice cream shop.

For years, the spot served as an informal crossing for children and adults. Now, with official markings and a push-button light system, the area is more visible to motorists and better protected for those on foot.

Pressing the button triggers bright flashing lights to alert drivers to stop.

According to information sent by Summit Mayor Elizabeth Fagan, pedestrian safety remains a top priority, and this project is part of broader efforts to make the city more walkable for residents of all ages.

The mayor encouraged residents to use the button when crossing, look both ways, and make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the roadway.

This latest addition joins several other flashing-light crosswalks throughout Summit, reinforcing the city’s commitment to protecting students, families, and seniors as they navigate the community on foot.
