National Weather Service to Investigate Possible Tornado Touchdown that Damaged School in Sussex County

The National Weather Service will access the damage and determine whether a tornado touched down in a Sussex County community causing damaged to a school Tuesday night.

About 14,000 customers in the Sussex County region were without power in the wake of the storm that tore through Northern NJ just before 9 p.m., according to FirstEnergy’s website.

Officials The Lenape Valley Regional High School in Stanhope will be closed Wednesday after damaged was caused to the roof of the building and fears that a tornado touched down in the town.

School officials say an event to honor track and field participants was going on in the school's gymnasium at the time, but no one was injured and everyone was safely evacuated.

Roads around the school were blocked off Tuesday night and power was restored to all but 4000 residents as of 4:30 a.m.

There were no injuries reported in the region.
