Newark South Ward Carjacker Steals Car with Children Inside Then Crashed into Tree; Injuries

Several victims were transported to the hospital after a car collision caused injuries in Newark's South Ward on Monday.

The early morning collision occurred near the intersection of Bergen Street and Hansbury Avenue at approximately 4:25 A.M. when a male carjacker took a car that had four children inside near Bergen Street and Keer Avenue.

According to police, the car was left running and there was no weapon shown.

Police say the suspect sped from the scene and crashed into a tree about a block away.

Emergency responders arrived and found the children suffering non-fatal injuries.

According to police, a 9-year-old girl suffered a fractured femur and her twin sister suffered a concussion. Police say a 5-year-old suffered a fractured skull and 11-year-old has a busted lip and leg pain.

Police say none of the victims were trapped in the car upon their arrival.

All of the children were transported to University Hospital for treatment.

Newark authorities have not confirmed if the suspect was one of the injured as of 5:45 a.m.
