Police in Newark are searching for suspects after gunfire erupted in the city’s North Ward Sunday evening.

According to preliminary information, shortly before 5:30 p.m., a ShotSpotter device detected multiple rounds fired in the area of Carteret Street, prompting officers to respond to investigate.
When police arrived at the scene near 12 Carteret Street, officers secured and taped off the neighborhood after locating multiple shell casings scattered in the area.
Authorities conducted a thorough search of the community but did not locate any victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
The suspects fled the scene before officers arrived and remain at large.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
