Authorities are working to determine exactly what happened after multiple children became ill during a summer program at the YMCA on North Arlington Avenue in East Orange on Thursday.
According to information obtained by RLS Metro Breaking News, emergency responders were dispatched to the facility following reports of what was initially described as a possible hazardous materials incident.
Several parents and witnesses contacted RLS Media, claiming that a child attending the program allegedly brought what was described as marijuana- or mushroom-infused candy and shared it with other children.
Those accounts have not been independently confirmed by authorities.
Witnesses told RLS Media that approximately a dozen children were evaluated by emergency medical personnel.
Some parents reported that several children were transported to area hospitals for further evaluation. Based on the information currently available, none of the reported illnesses appeared to be life-threatening.
RLS Media reached out to the East Orange Police Department and other officials seeking confirmation and additional details.
As of Thursday afternoon, no official information had been released regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident, including what substance may have been involved or whether any charges are expected.
The investigation remains active, and officials have not yet publicly spoken about the accounts of this incident.
