Multi-Vehicle Crash in Newark Kills Port Reading Man

A violent crash is now being looked into by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office after a deadly three-car collision took place early Monday morning in Newark.

Authorities said the crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. near 720 Frelinghuysen Avenue. 

Surveillance footage captured a red 2023 Toyota Rav4 speeding southbound before crossing the double yellow line into oncoming traffic. 

The SUV slammed head-on into a black 2018 Honda CRV, which then struck a third vehicle.

 

The driver of the Honda, identified as Agapito Abreu, of Port Reading was pronounced dead at the scene. 

His passenger, along with the driver of the Rav4 suspected of causing the crash, were transported to University Hospital for treatment. 

The driver of the third vehicle escaped serious injury.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said the investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains ongoing.
