Multi-Vehicle Crash Injures Five in Bergenfield

A multi-vehicle crash this afternoon in Bergenfield sent as many as five people to area hospitals with injuries, police said.

Shortly before 3 p.m., police responded to New Bridge Road and South Prospect Avenue for a report of a multi-vehicle crash.

Responding officers arrived to the seven vehicle crash involving a 53 foot tractor-trailer, registered to JB Hunt.

The crash investigation revealed that the tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound on New Bridge Road approaching the intersection of Prospect Avenue when it struck the rear of a vehicle waiting to turn left. The tractor-trailer than skidded into the westbound lanes striking four other vehicles including a Smart car.

A total of five female drivers – 18, 59, 49, 46 and 56 years old – were transported to Holy Name Medical Center and Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment.  

The driver of the truck was unharmed.

The Bergenfield Fire Department was on the scene to assist with vehicle fluid and fluid spill on the roadway.

The investigation is ongoing.

Traffic summons are pending against the truck driver, added police.
