MUCH NEEDED RAIN: Newark Braces for a Stormy Start to Sunday

Newark

By: Richard L. Smith

Sunday morning is off to a soggy and storm-filled start as residents across Newark and the North Jersey region wake up to steady rainfall and gloomy skies. The National Weather Service has issued alerts for heavy rain and potential flash flooding as a lingering weather system continues to move through the area.

At 4:45 a.m., it was a damp 63 degrees outside Weequahic Park along Elizabeth Avenue in Newark’s South Ward.

The downpour is expected to last through much of the morning, especially affecting those heading out to early worship services. Umbrellas, ponchos, and rain gear will be essential if you're stepping outside.

According to the National Weather Service forecast:

Sunday: Rain, heavy at times, mainly before 2 p.m. The high will reach near 73 degrees, with a northwest wind around 6 mph. There’s a 90% chance of precipitation, with rainfall totals between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday Night: Skies will finally clear, bringing a much calmer and drier night. Expect mostly clear conditions with a low around 56 degrees.

As always, residents are urged to drive cautiously, especially in areas prone to flooding. While this weather may put a damper on morning plans, brighter skies are expected by evening.

Have a safe Sunday, NJ and don’t forget your umbrella.
