A Morristown man was taken into custody Thursday morning after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers discovered a loaded handgun in his carry-on bag at a security checkpoint at Newark Liberty International Airport.
According to a statement released by TSA officials, the 9mm firearm was loaded with eight rounds when it was detected during routine screening.
Port Authority Police responded to the scene, confiscated the weapon and ammunition, and placed the traveler under arrest.
Travelers found with firearms at TSA checkpoints face steep federal penalties. Depending on the circumstances, civil fines can reach up to $15,000.
TSA officials emphasized that these rules apply to all passengers, regardless of whether they have a concealed carry permit, as firearms are not permitted onboard aircraft.
The incident underscores the importance of checking baggage contents before arriving at airport security to ensure compliance with federal regulations.
