Officials temporarily prohibited swimming at a popular Jersey Shore beach after more than 60 syringes reportedly washed ashore in Manasquan Saturday.

According to information reported by ABC7 New York, health officials ordered the waters off Manasquan Beach closed to swimmers while authorities assessed the situation. (ABC7 New York)
Local officials said the incident was being handled in coordination with the Manasquan Office of Emergency Management, Monmouth County Health Department and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
Officials planned to reevaluate conditions Sunday morning after two high-tide cycles before determining whether swimming could safely resume.
Beachgoers are being urged to follow instructions from lifeguards and authorities while the investigation and cleanup continue.
The source of the syringes has not yet been publicly identified.
