More Than 1.5 Inches of Rain Causes Flooding, Traffic Issues in Parts of Newark

Newark

More than 1.5 inches of rain fell across Newark on Monday, leading to flooding, traffic disruptions, and hazardous travel conditions in several neighborhoods throughout the city and Essex County.

The steady rain began moving into the region during the late afternoon, with conditions deteriorating around 4:30 p.m. as periods of heavy rainfall soaked roadways and overwhelmed drainage systems in some areas.

Several streets experienced significant flooding, with motorists encountering ponding water and slow-moving traffic during the evening commute.

In some locations, the heavy downpours turned roadways into what appeared to be flowing rivers.

One of the more serious incidents occurred in Newark’s Ironbound section near Wilson Avenue, where emergency responders were called after a vehicle became trapped in floodwaters.

Preliminary reports indicated an occupant was inside the vehicle when first responders arrived. The individual and vehicle were later safely removed from the water.

While the storm created challenges for motorists and residents, the rainfall also provided some much-needed relief for portions of northern New Jersey that have experienced dry conditions and drought concerns in recent months.

The Ironbound neighborhood, particularly areas near Wilson Avenue, has long been known for flooding issues during periods of heavy rain.

Residents say even moderate rainfall can lead to significant ponding, with stronger storms often causing water to accumulate quickly in low-lying sections of the neighborhood.

Forecasters say additional showers are expected throughout Tuesday, although rainfall is not anticipated to be as intense as what moved through the region during the past 24 hours.

Motorists are encouraged to remain alert for flooded roadways and areas of standing water during the morning commute.
