Authorities in Montclair investigated a vehicle theft Thursday evening after a suspect reportedly drove away in a white Range Rover that had been left running.

Reports say, the incident occurred around 7:14 p.m. near 209 Glenridge Avenue when the vehicle’s owner stepped out to place something in the trunk.

While the owner was outside, an unidentified individual reportedly entered the vehicle and drove away.

The SUV was subsequently spotted heading toward East Orange before authorities lost sight of it.

Although the incident was initially reported as a carjacking, police later clarified that it would be classified as a motor vehicle theft rather than a carjacking.

By approximately 11:25 p.m., authorities reported that the stolen vehicle had been recovered in Newark.

No weapon was reportedly involved in the incident. Additional details about the suspect or any arrests were not immediately available.

The incident serves as a reminder to motorists to turn off their engines and secure their vehicles, even when stepping away for just a few seconds.
