A heartbreaking search for a missing 10-year-old Philadelphia girl has ended in tragedy after authorities discovered her body inside a vehicle in Camden County, New Jersey.
The discovery was made Thursday, November 5, at the Stonington Court Apartments in Lindenwold, bringing a devastating conclusion to a search that had continued for approximately 10 days.
The child, identified as Jalayshia “Malayshia” Alford, had been missing since October 26, prompting an investigation involving Philadelphia police, federal authorities and law enforcement agencies in New Jersey.
According to reports from CBS Philadelphia and 6abc Action News, investigators located the girl’s body in the trunk of a vehicle at the apartment complex.
The circumstances surrounding her disappearance and how she ended up in South Jersey remain central questions in the investigation.
Authorities have reportedly been examining conflicting accounts connected to the child’s disappearance as they work to establish a timeline of events leading up to the discovery.
FOX Philadelphia reported that one individual had been taken into custody for questioning. However, officials had not publicly announced criminal charges at the time of the initial reports.
The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office is treating the case as a homicide investigation, with additional information expected during a Thursday evening news conference.
The tragic discovery has shifted what began as a search for a missing child into a criminal investigation spanning two states.
Investigators have not yet publicly detailed the child’s cause of death or the circumstances that led authorities to the vehicle.
