Middlesex County officials announced that Middlesex County and City of New Brunswick officials are excited to announce the opening of Liberty Square Park, a newly constructed 1.19-acre pocket park located between Neilson, Bayard, and Liberty Streets in downtown New Brunswick.
Formerly the site of the Wolfson Parking Garage — an aging 525-space facility owned by Middlesex County — the property has been reimagined and transformed into a dynamic urban landscape designed for recreation, relaxation, and community gathering, MCPO officials say. 
According to Middlesex County officials, the park project represents a collaborative effort between Middlesex County and the City of New Brunswick to revitalize downtown by creating more accessible, engaging, and environmentally sustainable public spaces.
Construction on Liberty Square Park began in November 2024 and reached completion in September 2025, MCPO officials said. 
Middlesex County officials stated that the City of New Brunswick oversaw the $2.34 million park construction, which was funded in part through a 50 percent matching grant from the National Park Service, administered by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).
In total, Middlesex County invested more than $4 million in the Wolfson Parking Deck site, including design, demolition, and environmental services, according to Middlesex County officials. Matrix New World Engineering served as the park designer, and A-Tech Concrete Company led construction efforts.
Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios said, “I want to thank Mayor Cahill and the City of New Brunswick for their leadership and collaboration in bringing this vision to life. Through strong partnerships with our municipalities, we continue to reimagine underutilized spaces, transforming them into places where people can come together, relax, and build stronger communities.”
Middlesex County Commissioner Charles E. Tomaro, Chair of the County’s Infrastructure Management Committee, said, “This project is about more than just revitalization—it’s about creating a modern, accessible green space that supports recreation, sustainability, and the continued growth of downtown New Brunswick.”
Middlesex County Commissioner Claribel A. Azcona-Barber stated, “For years, this area was in need of a welcoming space that reflects the spirit of our city—a place to relax, connect, and enjoy the outdoors. Liberty Square Park fulfills that need beautifully, and I’m thrilled to see it become a vibrant part of daily life here in downtown New Brunswick.”
New Brunswick Mayor Jim Cahill said, “Open spaces like this bring balance to our lives, strengthen our neighborhoods, and help make New Brunswick not just a place where people work and study, but a place where they want to live, stay, and enjoy.”
Liberty Square Park’s unique tiered design embraces the site’s natural slope, creating inviting spaces for walking, reading, meeting with friends, or simply relaxing, MCPO officials say.
Middlesex County officials said the park also features a dog park with designated areas for small and large dogs, dual slides with a climbing slope for children, and open areas suitable for future community programming and events.
Like all city parks, Liberty Square Park is open from sunrise to one hour after sunset, seven days a week. The Park will be operated and maintained by the City of New Brunswick, MCPO officials stated.
