Two Florida brothers have been convicted on federal drug charges after authorities said approximately 49 kilograms of cocaine were discovered during a vehicle stop in Woodbridge, New Jersey.
According to a statement released by U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer, Nelson Santos Munoz, 33, and Amauris Santos Munoz, 34, both of Miami, were convicted September 21 following an eight-day jury trial before U.S. District Judge Zahid N. Quraishi in Trenton federal court.
Federal authorities said the case stems from a January 26, 2023, traffic stop in Woodbridge involving a vehicle occupied by three people, including the brothers.
During a search, investigators reportedly recovered approximately 49 kilograms of cocaine packed inside three suitcases and a backpack.
Authorities said the individual packages were wrapped in cellophane or plastic, with coffee grounds placed between layers.
Evidence presented during the trial included cellphone communications that prosecutors said showed the brothers traveled to the Dominican Republic and conspired to purchase cocaine and transport it to the United States for distribution.
Prosecutors said the brothers later traveled from Florida to New Jersey with the cocaine, intending to distribute it.
Both men were convicted of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
Each count carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum potential sentence of life imprisonment.
Sentencing is scheduled for February 4, 2027.
