COMMUNITY: Merit Award for Essex County Sheriff’s Detective who Foiled Knife Attack Inside East Orange Apartment

Newark

According to officials, on the morning of June 13, 2018, Detective Mr. William Veniero and his partners arrived at an East Orange apartment complex to execute an arrest warrant.

County officials say the subject’s mother allowed our officers to enter the apartment and the 28-year-old subject was located in his bedroom.

While officers were inside the apartment, officials say the subject immediately ran from the bedroom, stopped, turned then produced a knife with a 9-inch blade and began cursing at detectives officials said.

According to officials, Detective Veniero issued repeated commands to drop the knife, but all the commands were met with repeated cursing from the suspect.

Fearing for the safety of all concerned, officials say Detective Veniero deployed his Conducted Energy Device and tased the subject who fell to the floor and finally dropped his weapon.

Essex County officials said EMS units were called to the scene to evaluate the suspect who did not suffer any apparent injuries or disorientation.

Officials say they charged the suspect with weapons possession, aggravated assault, and other charges during the arrest.

“During this dangerous incident, Veniero demonstrated superior police skills, restraint and professionalism” Essex County officials said in a statement.

We are proud to present our Medal of Merit to Det. William Veniero.
