Memorial Day Begins Damp, Foggy Across Newark, But Sunshine Returns Later Today

New Jersey

Good morning, New Jersey, and Happy Memorial Day. Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

After a dreary and rain-soaked holiday weekend, conditions across Newark and much of North Jersey are beginning the day under cloudy skies, patches of fog, and temperatures hovering around 56 degrees.

While another round of showers is moving through the region this morning, forecasters say this should be the final batch of rain before drier weather gradually arrives.

Conditions are expected to improve significantly by late morning, with rain tapering off around 11 a.m. and temperatures climbing into the 70s during the afternoon.

If you’re heading out early for Memorial Day ceremonies, parades, or family gatherings, a light jacket is recommended as the air remains cool and damp across downtown Newark and surrounding communities.

According to the National Weather Service, showers and possibly a thunderstorm are expected before 11 a.m., followed by a chance of additional showers through about 2 p.m.

Areas of fog will linger through the morning hours before gradually lifting. The high temperature is expected to reach near 75 degrees, with light winds becoming southwest at 5 to 7 mph.

The chance of precipitation stands at 80 percent, with rainfall amounts generally between one-tenth and one-quarter inch, though heavier amounts are possible in any thunderstorm.

Tonight, skies will remain mostly cloudy with temperatures settling near 61 degrees under light and variable winds.

Enjoy the improving weather, travel safely, and take a moment today to remember and honor those who gave everything for our country.

Have a great Memorial Day, New Jersey.
