Mayor Tony Vauss Continues Irvington’s Decade-Long Tradition of Safe Halloween Fun for Children and Families

Irvington Township

By: Staff

Mayor Tony Vauss, the Irvington Municipal Council and the Department of Public Safety will welcome families to Irvington’s annual Safe Halloween Event on Friday, October 30, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 1 Civic Square, in front of Police Headquarters.

For nearly a decade, Safe Halloween has provided Irvington children with a fun, supervised and welcoming place to celebrate Halloween while giving parents peace of mind.

The event features costumes, treats, candy-filled goody bags, family activities and positive interaction with Irvington’s police officers, firefighters and municipal employees.

The celebration has grown into one of Irvington’s most beloved family traditions. In 2025, nearly 3,000 children and families participated, demonstrating the tremendous community support for an event built around safety, togetherness and childhood joy.

For Mayor Vauss, Safe Halloween reflects a broader philosophy that public safety is about more than responding to emergencies. It is also about prevention, trust, relationships and creating positive experiences for young people.

“Children should be able to look back on growing up in Irvington and remember joy,” Mayor Vauss said. “They should remember that their community cared about them, that their police officers and firefighters knew them, and that their hometown created places where they could laugh, play and simply enjoy being children. That is what Safe Halloween is about.”

That commitment to community engagement has accompanied significant public-safety progress in Irvington, including an approximately 51% reduction in overall crime and 72% reduction in violent crime between 2014 and 2021, as well as just one homicide in 2025 — the lowest annual homicide total in the township’s modern history.

Mayor Vauss has consistently emphasized that safer communities are built through a combination of strategic policing, prevention, technology, youth engagement, recreation, neighborhood pride and strong relationships between residents and public servants.

Safe Halloween brings that philosophy to life.

For one evening, Civic Square becomes a place where families gather, children celebrate, public-safety professionals build relationships and the community creates memories together.

“This is a community effort,” Vauss said. “I am grateful to our Municipal Council, Department of Public Safety, police officers, firefighters, municipal employees and everyone who gives their time and energy to our children. When we invest in our young people, we invest in the future of Irvington.”
