Massive Flooding Closes NJ-21 in Newark

Newark

Police closed a portion of NJ-21 in Newark after heavy rain that fell in the region overwhelmed storm drains in several locations in Newark’s North and East Wards.

Water shot out of manholes like geysers, 2 to 3 feet, in the air as steady rain poured from the sky turning McCarter Highway at Clay Street into a river.

The closure caused massive traffic delays to building on Mount Prospect Street and on the highway in both directions.

Harrison Police closed the Jackson Street Bridge due to heavy flooding on Frank E. Rogers Boulevard which caused gridlock conditions in Newark's Ironbound section.

Expect residual delays in several sections of Newark.
