A Marlboro Township man has admitted to killing his mother’s longtime partner during a violent attack inside their Morganville home on New Year’s Day 2024.
According to information released by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Carl A. Richards, 41, pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree aggravated manslaughter before Superior Court Assignment Judge Marc C. Lemieux.
Police responded shortly after 12:45 a.m. on January 1, 2024, to a Texas Road residence following an urgent request for medical assistance for an assault victim.
Officers found 64-year-old George L. Mott III unresponsive and suffering from severe injuries to his head, face and neck.
Mott was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.
An investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau and Marlboro Township Police determined that Richards repeatedly assaulted Mott, ultimately causing his death.
Authorities said both men lived at the residence and that Mott had been the longtime partner of Richards’ mother.
Richards has remained detained at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution since his arrest.
Sentencing is tentatively scheduled for November 17, when prosecutors intend to seek a 30-year state prison sentence subject to the No Early Release Act, requiring Richards to serve 85 percent of the term before becoming eligible for parole.
