Man Wanted for Questioning in Attack on Off-Duty Newark Police Officer

Newark Police Seeks the public’s help in locating Andrew Lopez, 24, this is wanted for questioning in the assault of an off-duty Newark police officer on Tuesday, May 8th.

Police say at approximately 11:05 p.m., police responded to Bloomfield and Mount Prospect avenues on a call of a pedestrian struck and a person with a gun.

An off-duty city police officer was involved in a collision with another vehicle.

The officer exited his vehicle after observing someone on the ground when her was approached by a group of males who assaulted him and took his cell phone, although he had repeatedly announced that he was a police officer.

The other driver ran to safety and the officer was transported to University for treatment.

Major Crimes Detectives investigating the case are seeking to question Lopez regarding this incident.

Police arrested Geraldo Conception on Wednesday, May 9th and charged him with aggravated assault and conspiracy in connection this incident

. Several other suspects remain at large as this investigation continues police said.

While police are actively searching for other suspects, we seek the public’s assistance in quickly locating and removing them from our streets.
