Man Suffers Head Injury After Fall from Irvington Bridge into the Elizabeth River

Fast responding Irvington Township firefighters and rescue crews pulled a man from a section of the Elizabeth River after he fell from a bridge that overlooks the river on Thursday afternoon.

According to a preliminary statement released by Irvington Police Director Tracy Bowers, the incident happened in the 1000 block of Springfield Avenue -in proximity to Civic Square- shortly before 1 p.m.

Director Bowers said EMS transported the adult male to Beth Israel Hospital where he is being treated for head trauma.

Witnesses frantically called 911 when they saw a male fall about 15 feet from street level into the river according to authorities.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, but they did not say if the fall was due to criminal intent at this time.
