Man Shot Dead on Spruce Street in Newark's Central Ward

Newark

Newark's Central Ward residents said they observed a man struggling to stay alive after a shooter approached the victim and fired multiple rounds in his body in a section of the city's Central Ward on Monday night.

In the shooting incident, a violent weekend of shootings where bullets connected and injured about six victims spilled over into Monday with police rushing to several reports of shots fired in the area of Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard and Spruce Street just before 9:15 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found residents administering CPR on a heavily bleeding, unconscious and unresponsive man at that location.

Police requested a tent to conceal the young man's identity after paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Additional police officers were requested to the neighborhood to provide security for the crime scene after dozens of onlookers arrived in the area.

Police say the suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office will handle the investigation as the shooting is now a homicide investigation.

The motive for the attack has not been determined and no other injuries were reported.
