Man Shot Dead in Newark's West Ward

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into a shooting that killed a man in Newark Monday night. 

In one of the city's violent shooting episodes that gripped the western portion of Newark, police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the vicinity of 1012 South Orange Avenue near Salem Street. 

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a severely injured, unconscious and unresponsive man lying on the ground suffering gunshot wounds. 

Police say the victim was administered CPR before being rushed to University Hospital, where he died a short time later. 

Authorities believe two black males wearing grey clothing approached the victim and began blasting shots in his direction before they ran from the scene. 

Police have not released the motive for the shooting at this time.
