Man Sentenced to Jail for Explicit Contact of 10-Year-Old in Newark

Officials in Essex County  reported today that an Irvington man has been sentenced to 25 years in state prison for the sexual assault of a 10-year-old victim.
 

Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II said on October 10, 2025, a jury convicted Osbourne Gooden, 64, of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and third-degree criminal restraint.

 

The prosecution proved that on June 22, 2020, the victim was sitting onher front porch with her mother and sister, the defendant, and his friend. 

When the victim went briefly inside the home, the defendant followed her in and assaulted her.

 

After the sentencing, Assistant Prosecutor Teller said, “While no sentence can erase the trauma endured by the victim, it reflects the gravity and seriousness of these crimes.

 

Our office remains committed to seeking justice for survivors of sexual assault and protecting our community.
 

We commend the victim’s courage and hope this outcome provides a measure of justice and closure.”

 

Gooden is ineligible for parole. 

He was also sentenced to a condition of parole supervision for life and will be required to register as a sex offender.
