Man Sentenced to 18 Years in State Prison for Fatally Shooting Jersey City Teen

According to a statement released by Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, the Honorable Paul M. DePascale, J.S.C. sentenced Jaquay Gleaton, of Jersey City, to 18 years in New Jersey state prison for his role in the death of Judane Holmes, 16, of Jersey City, which occurred on December 26, 2018, in Jersey City.

 Prosecutor Esther Suarez said at around 3:25 p.m. on Wednesday, December 26, 2018,  the Jersey City Police Department received a report of shots fired in the area of 209 Bidwell Avenue in Jersey City.

When Jersey City Police Officers arrived at the scene, they found Holmes at that location with apparent gunshot wounds. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene at approximately 3:35 p.m. Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. 

 The Cause of Death was determined to be gunshot wounds and the Manner of Death to be homicide, The State Regional Medical Examiner's Office said.   According to county officials, Gleaton and two juvenile co-defendants were arrested and charged approximately a week after the shooting. During the course of the investigation, Gleaton was identified as the shooter and was waived up from Family Court to the Law Division.

Prosecutor Esther Suarez said Gleaton pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree aggravated manslaughter with the death of Holmes on January 30, 2020,

Gleaton must serve 15 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
