There is an active investigation underway into the death of a 51-year-old man killed in Riverdale early this morning.
Emergency responders rushed to the northbound side of Route 23 near I-287 at around 5 a.m. for reports of a pedestrian down suffering serious injuries.
According to initial reports, the victim was a passenger in a white GMC box truck driven by a 35-year-old man from Rutherford. The truck suddenly broke down so the passenger got out to examine it when the truck rolled backwards and over his body.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene after EMS attempted to perform life saving techniques.
The vehicle was impounded as the prosecutor's office and Riverdale police investigate this incident.
No other physical injuries were immediately reported.
The identity of the victim is being withheld until next of kin is notified.
