Man Killed, Several Others Injured in Monroe Crash

Monroe Township (Middlesex)

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Michael Lloyd of the Monroe Police Department announce today that police are investigating a fatal collision in which one passenger was killed and several others were injured in a crash in Monroe Township early this morning.

According to authorities, the deceased passenger was identified as Shashikant Patel, 81, of Monroe. He was pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries he sustained in the crash.

Officials say the driver and eight other passengers in the 2004 Chevy Express Van were taken to local hospitals and treated for their serious to moderate injuries. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle, a 2017 Honda Civic, were also taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The crash is being investigated by Officer Daniel Mosakowski of the Monroe Police Department and Detective Erik Larsen of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

A preliminary investigation determined that the driver of the Chevy Express Van failed to yield to a stop sign at the intersection of Matchaponix Avenue and Spotswood Gravel Hill Road where it collided with the Honda Civic.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Mosakowski at (732) 521-0222 ext. 242, or Detective Larsen at (732) 745-3263.
