Man Killed in Newark Gunfire

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announce that authorities are investigating a fatal shooting in Newark last night (Tuesday).

Authorities said, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Newark police units responded to the 100 block of Goodwin Avenue on reports of shots fired.

Arriving officers observed an unresponsive adult male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds authorities said.

EMS the rushed the victim to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:34 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending formal identification and notification of the next of kin, according to Fennelly.

This matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly.
