NJ Transit authorities are investigating a tragic incident in which a man was struck and killed by a New Jersey Transit train early Tuesday morning.
According to information released by New Jersey Transit Police, the accident occurred at approximately 1:44 a.m. when Raritan Valley Line train 5403 struck an adult male trespasser on the tracks just east of Cranford Station.
The train, which had departed Newark Penn Station at 1:28 a.m. and was scheduled to reach Raritan at 2:34 a.m., was the final scheduled train of the night.
Officials confirmed that none of the approximately 25 passengers or crew members on board were injured.
Travelers affected by the disruption were later transferred to a bus for the remainder of their trip.
The identity of the man has not yet been released, and the circumstances surrounding why he was on the tracks remain under investigation.
The New Jersey Transit Police Department is leading the inquiry into the fatal strike.
