Man Fatally Shot in Exchange of Gunfire with Police at New Jersey Motel

In a tragic incident at a South Brunswick motel, an unidentified man was fatally shot after engaging in a gunfire exchange with law enforcement officers.

The incident took place on (today) Wednesday, January 24, 2024, drawing a focused inquiry from the Attorney General's Office.AdOfficials said in a press release that the sequence of events began when operatives from the United States Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Task Force, in conjunction with the New York office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, converged on the motel situated along Route 1 South in Monmouth Junction.

Accoridng to The NJ Attorney General’s Office, their mission was to serve an arrest warrant on an individual implicated in numerous felony offenses.

At around 2:47 p.m., the situation escalated as the suspect and the officers exchanged gunfire.

Despite the chaotic scene, no officers sustained injuries during the confrontation. However, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene at about 4:29 p.m.

Investigators later recovered two firearms in proximity to the deceased individual.

In line with Attorney General Directive 2019-4, the Attorney General’s Office has taken the lead in the investigation.AdThis directive mandates a thorough investigation by the office in cases involving fatalities resulting from encounters with law enforcement or while an individual is in custody.

The directive also sets forth comprehensive standards and protocols to ensure these investigations are conducted with utmost integrity and transparency.

Officials said identity of the deceased remains undisclosed as the inquiry progresses.
