Man Convicted of Newark Murder

Acting Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced today Luis Mangual was found guilty by an Essex County Jury.

The jury convicted Mangual of Murder, Unlawful Possession of a Handgun and Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose.

Assistant Prosecutor Carlo Fioranelli tried the case before the Honorable Verna G. Leath, J.S.C.

Jury deliberation began this morning and returned the verdict after an hour of deliberation.

​This incident occurred on December 28, 2013, when the victim, Jose Alfaro was standing in front of his home on Mount Pros[ect Avenue when Mangual shot him.

​Assistant Prosecutor Fioranelli commends​ Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Detectives James Ventola and Javier Acevedo along with the other members of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit for their outstanding work.

The defendant is facing life in prison as a result of the verdict.

Judge Leath will sentence him in the near future.​
