A months-long investigation into the death of an 18-year-old woman in Guttenberg has led to the arrest of a Bergen County man now facing serious drug-related charges.

According to information released by Guttenberg police, the case began on Friday, May 10, 2024, when patrol officers responded to a medical emergency at a private residence in the town at approximately 4:42 p.m.
When officers arrived, they located the young woman inside the home. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said there were early indications that the death may have been related to a possible drug overdose, prompting detectives from the Guttenberg Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Unit to respond and begin a more extensive investigation.
Detectives working the case determined that the victim had ingested a substance that ultimately led to her death.
The investigation continued for months as authorities worked to identify the source of the narcotics.
During the course of the investigation, detectives concluded that the substance responsible for the woman’s death contained fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid that has been linked to a growing number of overdose fatalities across the region.
After reviewing evidence and following investigative leads, detectives identified Joshua V. Burgos, 30, of Ridgefield Park, as the individual who allegedly distributed the narcotics that resulted in the fatal overdose.
On Monday, March 2, 2026, members of the Guttenberg Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Unit arrested Burgos at a residence in Ridgefield Park.
Authorities said that during the arrest, detectives recovered numerous pills of an unknown nature along with drug paraphernalia and U.S. currency.
Burgos has been charged with first-degree strict liability for drug-induced death under New Jersey law.
Following his arrest, he was remanded to the Hudson County Correctional Center, where he remains pending his first court appearance in Hudson County Superior Court in Jersey City.
The investigation into the case remains ongoing.
