Elizabeth

A SWAT unit was called to the scene to assist in a barricaded person situation that occurred in Elizabeth's Elmora section Monday afternoon.

According to police, at approximately 12:05 p.m., they received a 911 call reporting a domestic violence incident in progress in the 700 block of Linden Avenue.

Upon arrival, they found a woman who reported that her husband had just destroyed her car after some type of verbal altercation.

Police located the severely damaged car and the suspects nearby.

When officers tried to question the man, he walked back inside the house and locked the door.

Elizabeth Police officers on the scene made several attempts to get the man to come out of the home but he refused according to officials.

SWAT arrived and set up a perimeter where they negotiated with the man who then exited the home without further incident.

Police say the suspect was arrested at issued a summons then released. There were no injuries reported.

In Governor Murphy’s press conference today, he spoke of the Elizabeth occurrence and noted that domestic violence cases are up around the state due to couples sheltering in place.

The incident remains under investigation.
