Man Arrested in Utah for Sexual Assault of a 9-Year-Old in North Plainfield

Somerset County officials announced the arrest of Fabian Osuna-Vargas, age 39, of North Plainfield, in relation to a sexual assault of a minor that occurred in North Plainfield.

According to officials, on Wednesday, October 19, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit was notified by the North Plainfield Police Department of a 9-year-old female victim who reported being sexually assaulted by an adult.

 Officials say, the child victim was interviewed by a detective from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit.

According to North Plainfield Police, the victim stated that she was sexually assaulted by Osuna-Vargas earlier that day in North Plainfield.

Police say, as a result of this investigation, which was conducted by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office and North Plainfield Police Department, defendant Osuna-Vargas was charged with 1st-degree Aggravated Sexual Assault and 2nd-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Minor.  

On Friday, October 21, it was determined that Defendant Osuna-Vargas had boarded a flight from Chicago, Illinois, to Salt Lake City, Utah.

Salt Lake officials said, defendant Osuna-Vargas was apprehended without incident in Salt Lake City, Utah, by members of the Salt Lake City Police Department upon landing.

Defendant Osuna-Vargas subsequently waived extradition from Utah and was transported by Somerset County Prosecutor’s detectives on Friday, November 4, to Somerville, where he was lodged in the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing.
