Man Arrested for Threatening to Kill Woman and Children

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Acting Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announced today that the Special Victims Unit of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office arrested Salaam Leeks, 29, of Newark following an investigation initiated by the Newark Police Department which revealed that Leeks was threatening to kill two women, their children or other family members if they would not have sex with him.

It is alleged that Leeks told both women they had to have sex with him to make up for actions taken by their boyfriends. Leeks is charged with conspiracy, criminal coercion, sexual assault and threatening violence.

Leeks was taken into custody last night. He is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility. Bail was set at $750,000 by the Honorable Stephen Bernstein, Judge of the Superior Court.

In addition to the Newark Police Department, the Special Victims Unit of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office the New Jersey State Parole Board assisted in the investigation.

These are allegations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
