Man Arrested for Fatal Shooting Outside of Paterson Bar

Paterson

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Troy Oswald announce that Jonas Rogers has been arrested in connection to the homicide that took place on July 7th outside of the El Tio Gozon Bar located at 243 21st Avenue in Paterson. Rogers is charged with Murder, first degree; Aggravated Assault, second degree; Endangering an Injured Victim, third degree; and Riot, fourth degree.

According to officials on July 7th at approximately 2:30 a.m., an officer from the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department on routine patrol came upon a crowd of people outside the El Tio Gozon Bar located at 243 21st Avenue in the City of Paterson.

Officials say at that time, the officer discovered one 35 year-old-male victim, later identified as Arnoldo “Ludwig” Alvarez from Paterson, lying unresponsive in the street.

Mr. Alvarez was transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition until he died from his injuries at approximately 3:15 p.m. on July 10th officials said.

The initial investigation revealed there was a fight outside the bar involving a large group of people, and Mr. Alvarez was beaten unconscious by Mr. Rogers during the altercation.

The State has filed a motion for pretrial detention in this matter that will be heard by a Superior Court Judge sometime next week at a date and time to be determined by the Court.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
