There is an active homicide investigation underway at a location in Newark's Central Ward as authorities investigate a shooting that killed a man early Sunday morning.
According to preliminary reports, the incident happened in the vicinity of Hartford and Hudson streets in the city's University Heights section of the Central Ward at approximately 2:52 a.m.
Police rushed to the scene where they found an unidentified male suffering bullet injuries at that location.
The victim has rushed the short distance to University Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead a short time later, according to authorities.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office was notified and have responded to take over the investigation.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation and there were no arrests reported.
