A male found suffering a fatal gunshot wound in a neighborhood in Newark has detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office investigating a homicide.
According to preliminary reports, police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the vicinity of South 20th Street and Springfield Avenue -700 block of 20th Street- at approximately 2:20 a.m.
Units arrive at the scene found a bleeding male victim suffering a gunshot wound to the face at that location.
The unidentified victim was rushed to University Hospital where doctors made the pronouncement a short time later according to The Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
EMS treated one other person at the scene for a non-gunshot wound according to police. Firefighters were called to the scene to wash down blood from the location.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
