Male Killed by Gunfire in Newark's West Ward

Newark

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has launched a homicide investigation into a shooting that killed a man in Newark's West Ward Sunday night.

According to a preliminary investigation, a large crowd that gathered in the vicinity of Sunset Avenue and Abinger Place hampered emergency responder's ability to get to the scene of a shots-fired incident with injuries reported around 10:17 p.m.

Police said as officers arrived at the scene, they found an unidentified male suffering multiple gunshot wounds after a suspect began to fire rounds in the Vailsburg neighborhood.

The victim was rushed to University Hospital for treatment then pronounced dead during the overnight hours according to officials.

Police officials requested officer assistance from other precincts to disperse the crowd after heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic lingered in the area during the investigation.

Police believe that a cookout was occurring during the time of the shooting.

The motive for the shooting is under an active and ongoing investigation.

No arrests have been reported.
